A historical site with a handsome monument of Col. James W. Fannin Jr. and his men surrendered to Mexican army after Battle of Coleto Creek on March 20,1836. Though Fannin believed surrender was on honorable terms, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna overruled local Mexican commander's clemency petition and ordered the Texans (some 342) executed at Goliad about a week later. The park is open daily. Facilities include water, rest rooms, electricity, and picnic accommodations.

The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center, located near the Rio Grande, is a living laboratory that teaches about plants, animals, and the ecosystem found in the Rio Grande Watershed. Open to the public on Saturdays, the center features four outdoor ponds that are home to American alligators, catfish, bass, and turtles. The plant area is home to over 50 types of native vegetation, including a cactus garde, wildflower hill, and South Texas brush plants.
