With its rich history and inviting culture, San Antonio is one of the most popular family destinations in Texas.
Find out why San Antonio is one of BabyZone's Top 10 Family Travel Hot Spots:
Each year millions of visitors flock to the Alamo City for the incredible cuisine, river parades, museums, amusement parks, resorts, historical sites, and so much more!
Free of charge and located just steps from the Riverwalk, The Alamo is a great beginning to a day of exploration. Families with children of all ages can enjoy the historical grounds, museum, and gift shop. For parents with infants, changing tables are available in the public restrooms.
Several entertainment venues can be found just a block or two away from The Alamo, including the Riverwalk IMAX Theater, La Villita Historical Village, and Rivercenter Mall.
Exploring the Riverwalk is fun but can become a little tricky for parents with strollers. There are no fences separating the century-old path from the water, and sometimes it can be a tight squeeze on a busy day. If you happen to visit during the holidays, your kids will delight in the nighttime boat ride on the river, with beautiful light displays and a friendly history lesson of The Alamo.
While downtown, be sure not to miss Hemisfair Park, located just off Alamo Street. Built to host the 1968 World's Fair, the park offers 15 acres of historic buildings, cascading waterfalls, a playground, the University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures and the world-famous Tower of the Americas (closed until summer 2006).
Brackenridge Park is located just minutes from downtown and offers an abundance of inexpensive family fun. Just be sure to bring comfortable shoes and warm-weather clothing as the temperatures in the city quickly rise in spring, summer, and fall. The more than 340-acre park is located on the San Antonio River and features bicycling and walking paths, picnic areas, pavilions, concessions, paddle boats, fishing, a playground, wildlife viewing, and a 3.5-mile miniature railway.
Across from the park's concession stand, you'll find the San Antonio Zoo, a must-see for any San Antonio trip.
