By Chazz Mathemeier

San Francisco, once considered an adults' playground, now has a plethora of attractions for you and your little one.

Find out why San Francisco is one of BabyZone's Top 10 Family Travel Hot Spots:

Looking for some fun things to do and see while in the City by the Bay this summer? With baseball season in full swing, you can see a Giants game at AT&T Park (good for children ages five and up), stroll through the museums South of Market: Zeum (children ages two and under are free) or the California Academy of Sciences, Steinhart Aquarium (children ages three and under are free), feast on sourdough bread at Fisherman's Wharf, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, or rent a pedal, electric, or row boat on Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. All of these attractions are stroller and wheelchair accessible. But if you only have a day to see San Francisco, here are some featured excursions that should not be missed.

Planning ahead for your trip to San Francisco is essential. Fog can drastically change the weather from a hot, sunny day to a cold, windy day within hours. Wear layers of clothing and comfortable walking shoes (traffic is unpredictable and time consuming, and parking is limited and expensive). It's best to see the city by foot, cable car, MUNI.

If your kid can't resist riding the cable cars through downtown, make sure to stop by the Cable Car Museum located in Nob Hill's historic Washington-Mason powerhouse (admission is free). The museum deck overlooks the huge engines and revolving wheels that pull and steer the cables as they enter and leave the powerhouse. If you want a quick bite to eat, across the street is the Gallery Café, where you can find coffee, juice, and sandwiches.

Chinatown is a bustling area of shops, food markets, and restaurants. It is best to take the bus or walk as parking can be cumbersome in this area of the city. Older children will love the grand gateway, stone carved lions, dragon-twined lampposts, and pagoda rooftops. A must see is the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory (admission is free). Watch as the cookies are being made and see how the ladies fold each cookie by hand. Sample a cookie or buy a bag. To curb those hunger pains, try the Hang Ah Tea Room at the end of a small alley in Chinatown. The restaurant serves dim sum (small plates of food) as well as dessert.

For kids with picky appetites, Mo's Gourmet Hamburgers, named after one of the Three Stooges, offers burgers, featuring a seven-ounce patty and a wide selection of toppings, freshly cut fries and milkshakes. They also offer salads, chicken, and meatloaf. They are located in North Beach, just a few blocks away from Chinatown.
