Snack Time
Many flights no longer provide meals, especially foods that will appeal to your child. Bring plenty of portable, non-messy, nut-free snacks on board such as small crackers, juice boxes, cheese sticks, and grapes. Keep yourself and your children hydrated with bottled water.
Soothe the Savage Beast
Whatever soothes your child, such as a pacifier or stick of chewing gum, is a must-have. During takeoff and landing, offer a stick of sugar-free gum, lollipop, or pacifier for sore ears. This is a good time to nurse or bottlefeed babies.
Playtime
Coloring books, stickers, quiet games (Legos, puzzles), and books are all great distractions. Pack small "toy kits" for each child in Ziploc bags so the pieces all stay together.
In-Flight Entertainment
The in-flight movie may be inappropriate for your child. Pack a Walkman complete with books, stories, and songs on tape/CD for each child. Portable DVDs are available for purchase or rental in many airports.
Take a Break
For longer trips, consider breaking up your trip into two flights. The time/money you think you're saving with one long, direct (exhausting) flight, won't be worth it in the long run. You and your children will be stressed out and exhausted for days.
Oh, the places you'll go! Enjoy the adventure!
