Family Travel Guide: San Francisco

San Francisco: Where to Stay

Argonaut Hotel

This property takes advantage of its Fisherman’s Wharf location to play up the nautical theme. Some of the rooms enjoy a few of Alcatraz, but all are decked out to resemble a luxury cruiser. Kids get to pick a new toy from the hotel’s treasure chest when they check in. Cribs and strollers are at the ready when requested.

Comfort Suites

San Francisco hotels are notoriously expensive, so for a budget-minded option you need to get outside of the downtown core. Comfort Suites is close to the airport, making it out of the way of the city’s attractions. The upside is that it provides plenty of space for families (every “room” is a suite), there’s a Nintendo in every unit as well as a fridge, and cribs are available on request.

Four Seasons

Kids can always count on a warm welcome at the Four Seasons. While its location near Union Square plants it in the middle of the action (it’s a five-minute walk from Zeum), the hotel offers reasons to stay indoors, starting with the in-room PlayStation and on-demand movies. Children also get snacks of milk and cookies, and under-18s stay in their parents’ room for free. Babysitting services can be arranged by the concierge.

The Maxwell Hotel

It’s always a nice touch when a hotel boasts its own children’s VIP program, as the Maxwell does. Situated near Union Square near Zeum and a cable-car stop, the hotel goes further than simply adding toys and treats as an enticement: parents can book a second, adjoining room for their children at half the regular room rate. Another plus: this hotel group runs its own San Francisco greeter service, which will match you up with a local volunteer to show you around town for free.
