Crow Canyon Archaeological Center
What is it? Pint-size Indiana Jones-wannabes (and their parents) can do some serious digging in the dirt at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Cortez, CO. The center’s weeklong program is billed as a camp for the whole family. No previous experience or skills are required. The week begins with an orientation to the ancient Pueblo Indian (Anasazi) culture, brings everyone into the lab to identify pottery, stone, and bone fragments, and then lets kids practice their digging skills on a simulated site. After this preparation, the whole family is ready to work alongside archaeologists at the Goodman Point Pueblo near Mesa Verde National Park.
Don’t miss This is a terrific opportunity to learn about Pueblo culture (evenings are devoted to traditional storytelling) and to appreciate the region’s natural beauty (a tour of Mesa Verde is a highlight).
Keep in mind The first thing everyone learns is that archaeology is a slow-paced endeavor – sifting through earth for pottery shards is a painstaking process. The program is open to ages 12 and up.
How much? $1,150 per person for adults, $950 per person for kids aged 12 to 17. Prices include accommodations and food, but not transportation to Crow Canyon.
