Steve and Doris Colgate Offshore Sailing School
What is it? Ahoy, matey – if you want your family to earn its sea legs there’s no better place to start. The Steve and Doris Colgate Offshore Sailing School has ten locations in the US and the Caribbean, including New York, Florida, the Bahamas, and the British Virgin Islands. The basic “Learn to Sail” course runs between three and five days, and is appropriate for those with no previous sailing experience at all.
Don’t miss This sailing school offers a nice balance of learning time and playtime. The family is “in school” (i.e. on the boat) in the morning, and the sessions are intensive, covering not only rigging and navigation but crisis management such crew overboard rescue. But everyone has the afternoon to themselves for other excursions, such as leisurely swims by coral reefs.
Keep in mind This is not a trip for children under age 11 – but since the sailing school works in partnership with different resorts, you can put the tykes in daycare for part of the day while you’re on the water with your older kids.
How much? The fees start at $795 per person for the basic “Learn to Sail” course. Fees are for the course only and do not include accommodations.
